a group of guys want to start a $50 buy in no limit regular hold em game.

so what should the format be that will work well? I need to know a good suggestion for blind structure and when to raise the blinds as more people are eliminated.

We will start with about 8 or 9 guys. What is a suggestion on the payouts? 70% 30%? or something like that?

no limit format. mostly want ideas on how big the blinds should go.

We are all inexperienced at hold em but want somthing that would be "real".

Depends on how much time you have. Start at blinds of 1% and 2% of buyin and double the blinds every 20 minutes. You should be losing players after about an hour or slightly later and be done in 2 1/2 hours max.

If you want to play longer, make the time longer before each increase. Or add a 1.5%-3% before the first and second levels.

Prize structure can be however you like. But with 10 people I like 20-30-50. I think that would still work at 8, but if you want bigger prizes, your 30-70 sounds good.

All the best with the tournament.

We have had over 60 tournaments this summer and had our big buy in one for $30 with 10 people that got done in 2 hours and 59 minutes. We gave everyone $1000 worth in chips and started the blinds at 5/10 for 30 minutes. Then went to 10/20 for 30 minutes. By this time you might only have 1 person out or none at all, but they start dropping in the next hour. we hit 25/50 next and leave it there for 30 minutes(we color up at that time also). We hit 50/100 next depending on how the board(there is 3 of us) judge the situation.
